‘Grounding’ in psychology is defined as a coping strategy designed to ‘ground’ you in, or immediately connect you with the present moment.
There are various methods for this in daily life, such as connecting with your breathing and your senses.
Here are some ideas for you if you are ever feeling overwhelmed or your mind is racing and you need to bring yourself back to the present moment:
🌿 Connect with the earth - spend a few moments barefoot standing or walking on the grass. Notice the feeling and sensations in your feet and take this opportunity to connect with your breathing. This technique, when practiced frequently is said to reduce pain, stress and improve sleep.
🌿 Sit on the ground - literally, as it sounds - step away from what you are doing and sit on the floor. Feel the support beneath you, focus on your breathing and spend a few moments reconnecting with your body.
🌿 Carry out a mindful task - you might not think of washing up or housework as a mindful exercise, but if you can be present and focus on the task in hand, rather than thinking of the next task, this can help you to feel grounded and calm.
🌿 Check in with all 5 senses. Look for:
5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.
