Let's Talk about Inflammation

Lots of us experience inflammation from time-to-time and often chronic inflammation. Inflammation is a normal part of the body's defense to injury or infection. It helps fight off viruses, bacteria or toxic chemicals. It becomes problematic when it lasts for long periods of time in healthy tissues. There can be many symptoms and causes of chronic inflammation. Some symptoms include: pain, swelling, bruising, redness/skin rash, joint issues, fatigue, abdominal or chest pain, and fever. These warning signs can often lead to disease and illnesses like: arthritis, diabetes, cancer, asthma, Alzheimers and other conditions. It is important to pay attention to what your body is telling you.

Some causes for inflammation include: autoimmune disorders, exposure to certain toxins or chemicals, untreated acute inflammation and many lifestyle factors like: excess alcohol consumption, obesity, too little or too much exercise, smoking and high stress.

How can we minimize or treat inflammation?

I am not a doctor by any means and strongly encourage you to talk with your healthcare professionals if you are experiencing chronic inflammation or pain. They can assist you in finding the right therapies or medicines to help.

From a holistic approach, I have some ideas to share with you to help you feel your best and keep inflammation low. I believe in a whole foods or mediterranean style diet to keep these levels low. Some of these healthy food choices include: oily fish like salmon, leafy greens, good quality olive oils or tomatoes (in moderation, they can have high levels of lectin.) Some foods to avoid are: fried foods, cured meats + nitrates, refined oils + trans fats like canola oil, and refined carbohydrates such as white flours + processed sugars.

By managing your weight and diet, avoiding cigarettes and alcohol, exercising moderately (3-5x per week,) and managing stress through mindfulness activities + stress relieving products (like the ones I am always preaching about,) I believe you will generally feel pretty good on a day-to-day basis.
